Benson Ngoma

Benson, father and head teacher

The Department of Education Standards under the ministry of Education in Namwala, donated a wheel chair to Benson Ngoma a grade 5 pupil. Benson has been a pupil at Lubanga Shibongwe Basic school since grade one and has never received such assistance before.
On this day, the Ngoma family saw the light of day when they where invited to attend an undisclosed event.

Father’s comment (James Ngoma Daka) : “I was asked by Mr. Fanwel Hadinke, the school head teacher, to come here at 14:00 hrs (2:00 pm). I didn’t know anything; I wasn’t told why I had to come.” Mr. Daka explained his amazement with utmost delight. “Am very happy about this, it is a relief because it has been hard carrying my son to school everyday. Am encouraging the world out there not to abandon the handicapped, they need love and acceptance. Those who can should help in areas like school fees to help children like my son have a future.”

Education Standards Officer – General Educating Ms Moonga accompanied by Education Standards Officer – Special Education – Moses Mungambata highlighted important issues that concern the disabled community. The dual pointed out that this had to be done not only out of duty in line with policy, but as a social responsibility. Mr. Mungambata pointed out saying “Human beings must co-exist, they should over come the individualistic attitude and think of the next person.”
Furthermore. Ms Moonga brought to light the policy of “Inclusiveness” intended to have all children regardless of physical status, to learn and mingle together. She encouraged the community to be part of the ongoing sensitization.
The dual concluded by saying that the government has dedicated itself to see to it that such children receive the same education as any other child. They mentioned that the government will provide the equipment needed to help these children.
They also said the school systems should be tailored to suit the needs of all children and not children suiting the school system.
