Two brothers of Buunga village in Chief Shimbizhi' area in Itezhi tezhi district drowned yesterday when their canoe capsized as they attempted to cross the Kafue river at Lutonga fishing camp.
Namwala district commissioner Ms Eunice Nawa confirmed to ZANIS today that Mr. Mostin Chirwa aged 26, and his young brother Muchondi Chirwa 23 drowned around 18:00 hours yesterday.
Ms Nawa explained the elder brother was escorting his young brother who was in grade twelve [12] to school in Itezhi Tezhi when they met their fate
She said a named fisherman at the same camp informed Namwala police because of its proximity to the area who rushed to the scene and retrieved the bodies around 12; 00 hour today.
Ms Nawa also cautioned those living along the Kafue plains to move to higher ground before the floods to avoid loss of lives.
"Am appealing to those who have not moved yet to do so because we expect a lot of flooding this year in view of the heavy rains and also we expect more water as the Zambia electricity supply cooperation[ZESCO] opens the flood gates at Itezhi Tezhi lake any time," said Ms Nawa.
And speaking on condition of anonymity a police officer at Nawmala police station said relatives were immediately informed and that the bodies of the deceased have since been buried.
