Namwala, June 9-2009-
Works and supply permanent secreatary Lieutenant Colonel Bizwayo Nkunika says government was committed to the construction of better road infrastructure in the country so as to link all the provinces to each other.
During a courtesy call on the Namwala District Commissioner Ms Eunice Nawa today, Lt Col Nkunika said government recognizes the important role that all weather roads play in the economic development of the country.
He said that government would endeavor to ensure that contractors engaged to work on the roads in the country do a better job to ensure that all areas linked to the rest of the country even during rain season.
Lt Col Nkunika who was in the District to tour infrastructure developmental projects said it was sad that the Choma- Namwala Road has taken years to be rehabilitated and tarred but added that works were now progressing well.
He said the Monze-Neiko road would also be on constant rehabilitation.
Lt Col Nkunika also said feasibility studies have been undertaken on the Namwala- Itezhi Tezhi road that pass through the Kafue Flood plains and works would begin soon.
Meanwhile commissioner Nawa thanked government for working on the major roads leading into the District saying this would significantly assist farmers to transport their produce to better markets in towns along the line of rail.
And Lt Col Nkunika said the stalled Kabanga clinic was been worked on by the same company that abandoned the project in 2006 after the government’s intervention.
He said it was sad that a named contractor abandoned the Kabanga clinic project in the area before completion and adding that government would not tolerate contractors who have bad habits of abandoning projects before they complete them.
But Ms Nawa suggested to the government to consider introducing potential contractors on any government project to the District administration so that any shoddy works by contractors could be quickly identified.
The Kabanga clinic project worth about K500 Million was abandoned by Builders developers limited [BDL] on 2nd May 2006 in unexplained circumstances.
After the government intervention the company started work on the project on 1st May 2009 and construction work of the clinic and one staff house is expected to be completed this month.
